Sara Kanoo

Sara Kanoo is a designer and cultural practitioner whose work explores the relationship between design, craft, sustainability, and community. Raised within a family-founded cultural institution that has shaped Bahrain’s artistic and intellectual landscape for nearly three decades, she developed an early understanding of the role that art, culture, and collective knowledge can play in shaping communities and public life.

With a background in architecture, Sara’s work extends across furniture, interiors, graphic design, exhibitions, public interventions, and spatial experiences. She has led multidisciplinary projects, festivals, and community initiatives that create opportunities for dialogue around sustainability, design, culture, and place.

Sara collaborates with a range of institutions and organisations, including the Jasra Handicrafts Center and the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra). Working closely with artisans, she explores contemporary applications of traditional knowledge and craft practices, including palm weaving, pottery, jewellery making, natural dyes, and material experimentation.

As the founder of That Studio, Sara leads projects that foreground cultural storytelling through design. Her practice integrates cultural, social, and environmental sustainability, with a particular interest in regional craft traditions, material innovation, and the role of design in strengthening connections between people, place, and heritage.
